Nebulous Notes App Reviews

Excellent for use with Dropbox

Fast and easy link to Dropbox for excellent text based note app. Links to all of Dropbox without unnecessary synching.

Not good

See those good reviews,so I bought it. Very disappointed, the biggest issue is not able to rename note which makes this app useless.

Fantastic Dropbox support

Finally a replacement for PlainText. Fantastic Dropbox sync gives the appearance of editing files directly on Dropbox and not having to copy them local. Outstanding.

Great in-depth text editor

Tons of options, works well with Dropbox, simplenote, etc.

Love Those Arrow Keys

Update 2015.07.20: Just keeps getting better and better. ----------- Originai review (amended) Way back in the release notes for Ver 6.9 the developer said, "I finally feel good recommending this as an alternative to the built-in Notes app." This is plain crazy. Nebulous Notes was 100 x better than the built in Notes app from day 1. Why? because of the macro-extended keyboard, including ARROW KEYS!!! They are the gorilla-elephant feature missing from Notes and so many other iOS apps. There are dozens of other killer features to Nebulous Notes. Let me just mention: 1- You can lock access to your files. (Probably not true file encryption, but useful. 2- Automatic Dropbox integration (although I dont use Dropbox, most people like it.) 3- One click upload to Evernote. 4- Did I mention how I love the enhanced keyboard, especially the arrow keys? 5- Undo/Redo. Have you noticed how many apps dont have this? A major plus. Buy this app. It is worth the money. (I have *zero* connection with the developer. I just like the app. I have never had any trouble with it.) iPod 5G, iPad 3, both with iOS 8.3 (upgrading to 8.4 today)

Google drive sync needed

This app is almost perfect. If it would sync with text files in google drive then this would let me do 90% of my job in a pinch on the road.

STILL Excellent !!!

The UI is totally intuitive, with just the right amount of customization. I especially like changing font size just by pinching (for when these old eyes get tired). Another great and WELL EXECUTED feature is the row of "macro keys" over the keyboard. Theres just some characters that are hard to get to on the iPad and this app makes it easy, as well as making it simple to activate "undo", "redo", and pretty much anything else you can think of. Editing in full screen on the iPad is also fantastic and Im very impressed. I only had to spend a little while with the app before feeling compelled to write this review, which never happens. (The above was written many years ago now, making this one of only a handful of apps that Ive never felt the urge to switch from. And this is despite having tried many others over the years, just to keep track of what was going on in the "app world". Nebulous is still my "go to" text app and is, as I just saw before writing this updated review, RIDICULOUSLY LOW-PRICED. Its a rare combination of OUTSTANDING QUALITY, at a beyond reasonable COST!) I dont mean to over-sell it, but this app really was (AND STILL IS!) a work of software art! Many, many thanks to the developers.

The note app I have been looking and waiting for

I love this app. I used to use writeroom (which was discontinued). I was on the lookout for an alternative for months. I recently purchased Drafts for $ 9.99 and so regretted the purchase (it doesnt sync to Dropbox properly). However Nebulous works sooooooo good. I would have paid $ 9.99 for this app. A-MAZ-ING

Best Dropbox integration on iOS

Best Dropbox integration on iOS. Doesnt try to sync your whole Dropbox. Lets you navigate Dropbox folder, edit files you want to edit, uploads when it saves. Not the fanciest editor, but great since Dropbox integration works!

Core Functionality

Nebulous Notes has been around since early iOS. It is one of those quiet and assuming apps in a wilderness of plaintext "notes" choices. The developer has actively kept pace with latest iOS and was one of the first to offer rock solid Dropbox integration, which remains at the core of its functionality. In fact, the unique ability of Nebulous Notes to access, save and manage Dropbox files without a fuss rivals most notes apps. Then with MarkDown, MultiMarkdown, RichText views, customizable keyboard shortcuts, pinch-to-zoom, optional auto-save, full-screen writing, you have the most essential ingredients needed for a robust notes app. There are many other welcome settings touches, along with the industry standard plaintext output choices. Which brings me to the issue of customization. Theres a lot of talk about "productivity" and how "customization" gets in the way of writing. That may be a real issue, but I appreciate the abilty in Nebulous Notes to make the writing environment my own. If I AM COMFORTABLE with the environment, then the rest gets out of the way. Period. I am not a fan of apps that decide exactly what that looks like for me. Nebulous Notes is one the best values on the App store, and frankly would still be so if priced higher, but dont let that fool you. Its up there the best available.

Best Enhanced iNotepad App 4me

REVIEW~ New version is very clean. Very similar, runs just as well on iPhone + iPad, and the User Interface tweaks are GR8. (Tested against 6 more note apps! Still best 4 my uses.) OLD REVIEW UPDATE~ Using Neb Notes (NN) for over 18 mos. every day now. Nice update for iOS. Like the active web links. V. solid & v. handy. Dropbox cloud storage backup perfect for my PC & sharing. ~STILL~RECOMMEND~ FEEDBACK~ Would *love* a paid upgrade for employing simple B/I/U text display w/o Markdown. OLD REVIEW~ Nebulous has run smoothly for me for >6 weeks. It has ALL the important features I wanted, plus a few extra that I have come to think are essential now. My biggest pleasant surprise was that Dropbox (DB) cloud sync is extremely easy compared to many other note apps I labored with. Staying organized using folders is mucho helpful. This app opens any text note file I had already created with any note recording app previously tested. ~HIGHLY~RECOMMEND~ Runs well on my iPhone & iPad mini.

No iCloud Integration

I guess I just assumed I could use my iCloud folders to type my notes and open them here without resorting to a third party DropBox account as if it were 2009. I was hooked by the word wrap on pinch-to-zoom, which I very much need. But without a DropBox account, this app is worthless to me.

Broken

Shows one full screen of text and that’s all. Notes are truncated beyond that.

Confusing UI

Navigation is confusing, unclear. Some of the icons dont make sense. Common sense settings are buried under advanced. The only thing I like about this is the ability to edit txt files in my Dropbox, and to save new ones.

Possible workaround broken update--I use this app every day

New version, possible workaround broken release: Using my new iPhone 6s and iOS 9 and syncing with Dropbox, I can only see the first screen of long notes. Discovered by accident that if I select any text in that first screen, the rest of the note suddenly is visible. Old versions: I got this app for free during a special offer. Its very useful. I use it every day. I keep a to-do list document and a shopping list document on Nebulous Notes and because its in my free Dropbox, I can edit the documents from my computer or refer to them from any computer or on my iPhone if I am out. It is also a good app for drafting or editing documents when you have time away from the office. The documents must be simple text documents, but you dont need fancy formatting just for lists and for first drafts of documents, and there is some basic formatting available in the app, too.

Major bug in the release

The past releases worked well with Dropbox. But now all of the text past the first screen full is missing. I had had issues with the application hanging the whole phone and in some cases crashing. Update: looks like if you switch to edit mode it gets you around the with seeing no text past the first screenful.

So horrible update ive ever experienced

Update 8.3.1 -> 8.4 is the highest bad update. At first the reason why i choose nebulous note app in many other writing apps is using txt extension and simple user interface and comfortable dropbox backup. But after 8.4 update, everything got changed and messed up. Why my txt file were not saved in My notes folder but outside(i mean, root folder)??? I really really wish back to earlier 8.4 updates.

Improvement

The customizable short-cuts are brilliant. Makes writing / editing prose a breeze.

The only one Ill use

Nebulous is an amazing app and the dev keeps making it better. I personally use it for recreational writing (since before the time of Byword and other writing apps) and code. The key really is that all encompassing macro bar. As far as the latest update, all that happened was a name change. And @Gehorchte (sp?), after tapping the folder icon, click notes. If you scroll up, you can see your "My Notes" folder is still there. Tap on it to go inside. If you tap the "X" (back to note view) this location is saved and where all new notes will go. To fix the ones accidentally created outside, go back to the main folder, tap edit, and the blue "Move" button. Scroll up, select your desired location (in this case "My Notes") and hit "Ok" underneath the document name. Repeat for any other notes as needed. Fun fact: You can use any folder for new documents. Mine hang out in my Applications/Notes/ folder in my Dropbox. Im unfairly taking off one star for an annoying bug. It seems in a longer note that Nebulous remembers an earlier version of the document and cuts off all additional content (You can scroll to the correct size for the complete document but the area is blank). This seems particularly bad when closing the app while the note is still open. The workaround seems to be clicking the name, closing the note, then the app. And reopening upon next launch. If it persists then Ill repeat while doing something in between to clear the memory. It hasnt given issue past 3-4 times with the above. I honestly havent sent in a bug report yet because I’m terrible with email. And the dev has always been responsive. Anyway, Nebulous is my favorite note taking app. Its versatility is unparalleled and I hope we see great things from this app for years to come.

A steal!

This app is fantastic. Dropbox sync is reliable. Text editing is simple and elegant. The customizable keyboard shortcuts bar is awesome. Id happily pay much more than they are charging. BUY IT!
